Background

KillaCutz Records is a local vinyl records store based in Amsterdam founded in 1996. They specialized in all types of Electronic music like Chicago House, Detroit Techno, Deep House, UK Tech House, Garage, Drum & Bass etc. 

Aside from the physical store in the city centre of Amsterdam, if you want to order online at KillaCutz, you are redirected to their Discogs page. This is a third-party open source platform. On this platform KillaCutz database holds over 15.000 records. You can find many classic labels and artist from late 80’s until today. 

They used to have their own website too, but of June 18th this website (www.killacutz.nl) is down. However, this was only a landing & contact page through which customers were also redirected to their Discogs page.

Besides buying records customers are also able to sell the records they have to KillaCutz.​​​​​​​
The Challenge

Small local shops often have lower annual sales due to the fact they only have a physical store. So, they lack online presence and thereby lack the reach to increase their sales.

The initial challenge for this case was to help a small local shop to improve their online presence to be more competitive in the market. However, because the chosen local store only has a landing-page presence online and sell their vinyl records through a third-party (Discogs), we faced an other challenge.

The challenge was to design a webshop for the existing website of KillaCutz.

About the webshop

The webshop of KillaCutz offers a way for customers to enhance their trust in the quality of the purchases and for the brand to have a stronger identity.

Many customers worry about the quality of their product. This is the most important element for buying a vinyl record. Either because of the quality of the actual record, the packaging or the shipping. Therefore, visiting the store has the advantage to listen to the record before buying it.

Instead of immediately being redirected to the third-party open source online seller, customers can visit the online store of KillaCutz within the website of KillaCutz. 

This webshop delivers the quality that people were used to from KillaCutz retail store, which puts their minds at ease.

Customers can create a personal account in which they can save their preferences and keep track of their purchases/wishlist

In the webshop itself the items are clearly described with pictures of the record the cover and all the information there is to know about the vinyl record. On the product page the ratings of owners and/or previous owners of the records can be found with ratings up to 5-stars accompanied with a personal comment.

Finally, for extra quality reassurance, a demo can be played of the actual vinyl record. A customer can also make a reservation for it to listen to the record in the KillaCutz store.
